2020.11.13 Reading with Material: Sophie Seita

Please join the Organism for Poetic Research for our second event of the fall semester!

1:00pm on Friday, November 13, 2020: The OPR will be virtually hosting Sophie Seita (Boston University) for an interactive, performance workshop entitled, “Reading with Material.”

In this practice-based workshop, participants will experiment with forms of live reading, close listening, and performative explorations of text, movement, and objects in space. We will investigate what it means to read materially, to read the material, or what changes when we read with/through/alongside/or on materials. We will also discuss questions of touch as knowledge in relation to language and performance.

Proposed reading includes:
   ·   Anni Albers, ‘Tactile Sensibility’ in On Weaving
   ·   The introduction to Eve Sedgwick’s Touching Feeling
Some of the practical exercises will be drawn from Pauline Oliveros’s Sonic Meditations & other movement practices.

Participants are welcome to bring their own work or theoretical, historical, and literary texts they would like to engage with performatively. Recommended materials include: paper, fabric, string, wire, clay. Participants are also invited to use other supplies, props, slides, images, or music they have at home.
